Twitter gave me an opportunity to share the gospel with a girl who, before then, was a complete stranger. She started following me because she noticed we had similar interests (music, reading, Neil Gaiman, etc.), and I started following her too. I tweeted something from an article I was editing and she asked if she could read the whole thing. I got our US office to send her the issue. I also asked them to include a note from me in which I outlined what I believed and invited her to tell me what she believed. She didn't take me up on that, but she remains friendly whenever we happen to cross paths again on Twitter!

I agree and think this would be a great way to organize an important part of the web. Implementation is going to be pretty tricky, but then again, look back at all we learned in the early days of domain registration and I'm sure we can improve upon that.

Looking outside the box (twitterverse, of course hashtags were used prior to that) they can be used for a broader purpose. To tidy up the web, eliminate all that is bad on it, and truly connecting all as one. That is why I am working on creating "Hashtag Code" it is code that can be utilized on any website and people can hashtag it with the hashtags they see fit, then those hashtags will be used to create universal tools to help benefit everyone. Would love to discuss the project, as I want to make it open source.

While a registry is a good thing - where top strings are prioritized. I want to implement "Indexicality" into the hashtag strings, meaning that - just like in language where things have multiple meaning...so, do the hashtags, but that will be dependent on their use at that determined moment and place. I call that "Hashtag Language" where it becomes a interface for users based on their langauge understanding and use, not by forcing them to some rigid standard.

The tools that can be created by mapping the net in form of human language determined by users is simply - incredible. You could tidy the #www totally up.

I'll be contacting you, hope we can talk.

Hi Andrew,

I am a newbie twit (@point8estate) and thus liked your little Oz twitterers list. Just wondering if you ever bothered to break things down by state?

Thanks

This is a great list Andrew - here's something else to add into the mix. I pulled together a list of Australian Creative Industries (organisations mostly) on Twitter:
